How are States Affected?
As many of you must have noticed, rainfall in this month of July 2023 has been exceedingly occurring in large numbers, however most of us do not think very highly of this situation. But after we take a deeper look, it becomes clear that the situation has been extremely fatal not only to property and infrastructure but also precious lives. If we look at statistics, at least 36 States or Union Territories experienced excessive rainfall in this monsoon, exceeding the normal rainfall by 61%-10,000%!
Himachal Pradesh, normally known as a state of serene landscapes and a major tourist attraction, has been experiencing excessive floods, landslides, blockage of roads, damage to infrastructure and communication systems and even heavy LOSS OF HUMAN LIVES! This is majorly due to incessant and excessive rain, which have been occurring at unprecedented records like 436% increase on July 7-11. In Himachal, the Sirmaur district got the highest rainfall of 514mm, followed by Solan at 472.6mm and Bilaspur at 335.9mm with many others famous destinations like Shimla and Kullu getting above 250 mm rainfall, causing the deaths of innocent tourists due to floods.
In the case of Punjab and Haryana, these two states have also suffered a similar fate where excessive rainfall has not only damaged infrastructure and water-logged crops leading to worse crop yield, but also has been traced behind at least 7 confirmed death cases! Many districts in Punjab got heavily unsuspected rainfall, like Fazilka which got an astronomical 7650% excess rainfall as compared to normal rainfall levels on 9th July; Faridkot got 3355%, Rupnagar 3156% and SAS Nagar 2378%.
